A good pizza place is essential.
I’m not talking those big chains, I’m talking locally owned and maintained places that have a whole lot of history.
Bring in Pizza Pilgrims.
Their story is a pretty interesting one.
Pizza Pilgrims started out with two brothers working ordinary jobs in London. Each was unhappy with their status quo life. So they quit, traveled to Italy, picked up a three-wheeled van (seriously) and toured the country soaking up expert pizza making skills.
After their journey, they returned to London with their van and have become legendary food van vendors ever since.
Of course, their pizza making van success meant they had to take it up a notch by opening their own restaurant.
Directly across from a Pizza Express chain on Dean Street in Soho lies the newly established Pizza Pilgrims.
We stumbled in around 8pm on a Tuesday night. To the left there is a small kitchen countertop where pizzas are being made fresh and baked right in front of you… and it smells amazing.
The hostess came over quickly and put our names on a list, it’d only be a half hour wait for a table and they brought us drinks in the meantime. White wine and a beer. An excellent start.
Also, I’m not entirely sure if this is standard policy or if they completely forgot to charge us for our drinks while we waited, but they didn’t charge us for our first round. I think it’s a nice touch. Regardless, we ordered another round when we were seated…
Anyways, you don’t mind sitting and waiting for a bit.
The inside is unique, quirky. A mix of dark forrest green and white is patterned throughout and some of their product is used as the temporary decor, flour anyone? You can tell why these brothers have been succeeding every step of the way.
Pizza making at its finest.
After close to a half hour wait, we were led downstairs to their seating area. It’s all very casual. You can’t help but kick back and relax, eager to try out the grub.
The menu isn’t that large, but it doesn’t stop you from an agonizing decision.
J and I both opted for Margherita pizzas. What can I say? If you want to find out if something really is the best, order something simple.
A short while later our pizzas were brought over, sizzling hot. It’s hard to restrain yourself not to dig in right away, it smells incredible.
Okay, okay. Only one more.
Honestly, this pizza was delicious. And the thin crust means you can nearly finish the whole thing. But in case your stomach is a bit too small to do so, make sure to take someone exceptionally hungry to eat up your leftovers. It’d be almost painful to leave anything on your plate, I promise you that.
Unfortunately, we didn’t leave any room for dessert. So we headed out to catch our next train.
I’d completely recommend Pizza Pilgrims for anyone looking for a real homemade Italian pizza… crafted by two Englishmen.
And of course, if you’re not in Soho you can always catch them out in London driving their three wheeled food van!
